Historian Report JD

Last weekend,we took a hiking campout at Camp Wisdom. We left out on friday night with packs on our backs with what we thought was very little food. When we got to Camp Wisdom,we hiked about 1 a mile to get to our campsite! The next day, we went to CedarRidge Valley. We went on a cool butterfly trail. Once when we walked through the trail,we started our super cool hike. We hiked about 2.5 miles until we had lunch. During lunch,Mr.Saye,Martin Alvarado,Alex Salinas, and Sam Barbee Had to walk about 2 extra miles to get water. After lunch, we went on with our hike back to the van another 2.5 miles . Once when we got to the van, we went straight to Camp Wisdom. We had dinner at about 8:00-9:00. After dinner we had a flag retiement cermony where everybody got to  throw a piece of the flag into the fire. After that,we had Mrs.Barbee's great rice krisppie treats that she made!!! After that, everybody went to sleep. The next morning,we had breakfast and had to pick up trash around the camp as part of Leave No Trace. After that,we hiked back to the van and left for the long ride home. By the way no one went home all that hungry.

Keeping Garland Beautiful, one day at a time

Go to user: ksayeYesterday I had an opportunity to help keep my wonderful city beautiful. With me were 5 scouts and another Scoutmaster, Tom Salinas.

We had a great time and collected bags of trash along the way! We even met up with another youth organization, Garland Youth Council (http://www.garlandyouthcouncil.org) that I did not know exist.

During our trash pickup, we discovered several things including: shopping carts in the creek, dead raccoons (a favorite), beverage containers, paper, plastic bags, a cape and a vehicle side mirror. While we were there, Armando, Martin and Gerald all fell in love with Frisbee golf.

Working hard, a reporter came by and captured us in action. You can read the write-up here: http://www.aroundgarland.com/city.cfm?article=1338 and you can see some of the pictures here: http://www.aroundgarland.com/photoalbum.cfm?id=1338.

After the event we all had hot dogs, drinks and chips. We also entered for door prizes and guessed at how many storm drains were in the City of Garland (ask anyone who when if you think you know the answer).  Hint: 10,001 (my guess) was too high.

Lastly, a special shout out to:

1.     Cub Scout Pack 276, for collecting the most bags,
2.     Garland Water Department for the cool pens and notebooks
3.     The Girls Scout Troop (100 I think) who saved 2 new kittens

I had a great time and I would like to thank the boys for helping and Scout Master Salinas for leading this event.

 Great Work Armando S.

Go to user: ksayeOn Friday December 16th, I was invited to Armando’s service project and had a chance to meet most of the Garland Cross Guards.

For those who did not know, a while back Armando noticed some Crossing Guards helping children cross the street, but they were cold and not wearing gloves.  Armando though and asked his mom "can we help them by buying some gloves and hats?"

After careful planning, they decided to raise the money purchase hats and gloves for ALL 84 Garland crossing guards.  They raised over $700 for this occasion!

On Friday December 16th they surprised the crossing guards with this them gift. I was honored to represent the troop and watched Armando give a great speech.  I was then humbled to see how appreciative the guards were. They were happy someone though of them and I was shocked that no one had ever done anything like this before.

Pictures were taken, stories were told and Armando was the man of the hour.

Great work Armando!

BIG THANK YOU to Mr Saye and Mr McKelvey for our Computers Merit Badge Day

Go to user: BrendaBBrendaB writes "We want to send a great big THANK YOU to Mr Saye and Mr McKelvey for putting together a wonderful day of working on our computers merit badge. We are so thankful for their experience in the computer industry and for teaching us so much in one day. We had a great attendance of about 25 scouts. We got to see the data center at the BSA headquarters and also went to Microsoft. We played video games and even learned how to program some HTML. We are truly blessed to have this experience. I also enjoyed working with all the scouts helping them program. I think they should make the computers merit badge required for Eagle Scout. It is so important for them to know about computers. I can't wait to see what these guys do when they grow up. THANK YOU again!"

 A Great Big Thank You

Go to user: CynMomCynMom writes "Thank you to Michael Cole, Sharon Faulkner, Greg Haskell and Ellen Reininger who spent 4.5 hours auditing our books for the past year.  There was a lot of information and several binders full of papers to look through, but they worked hard and did a thorough job of completing the audit.

Thank you for your time and your suggestions and ideas on how we can continue to improve our accounting and record keeping."

 Happy Anniversary

Go to user: ksaye9 days ago marked our 1 year anniversary.  Then we started with 5 scouts and just a few adults.  One year later we are up to 27 scouts and over the next few weeks I am guessing we be at 37 scouts!

What a fast and wonderful year it has been.  We have accomplished so many merit badges, canoed over 20 miles, rode horses and even melted metal!  While I do believe the past year has been great, I eagerly look forward to the next 12 months now that we are experienced.

While growing does have its challenges, change is good great.  I eagerly look forward to the new scouts and leaders + watching the existing scouts excel in things like: Order of the Arrow and high adventure camping.  We have even started to see the patrols, such as the Pyromaniacs, branch out to do their own thing and really show the rest of the troop what leadership is all about.

Happy to be at Troop 1978,
Scoutmaster Kevin Saye
